Agricultural hydrologist

Vinay Nangia is an agricultural hydrologist with experience in agricultural water resource management and environmental impact assessment. At ICARDA, he works on water-use efficiency assessment, crop production function analysis, irrigation and drainage performance diagnosis, and evaluation of water conservation options.

His current research involves the measurement, modeling, and management of uncertainty and risk for non-point source pollution of surface and groundwater; the evaluation of alternative farm management strategies for improved water quality and sustainability; the evaluation of policies for soil and water resources; irrigation and drainage performance diagnoses; and valuation of ecosystem services.

He began his career in 2005 as post-doctoral fellow at the International Water Management Institute in Sri Lanka. Then he moved to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, studying greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture. He has worked in several large river basins, conducting research on irrigation and drainage management and GIS applications in hydrology. He was visiting professor at the Institute of Soil and Water Conservation of the Chinese Academy of Science.

He has given scores of training on hydrologic modeling in a dozen country and serves on the editorial board of three professional society journals. He is a recipient of several awards and honors, such as 2014 Outstanding Young Scientist Award from the Association of Agricultural Scientists of Indian Origin. Nangia has authored 45 publications.

He holds a Ph.D. in water resources science from the University of Minnesota.
