A practical hands-on PGR data management Training course was organized from 26th - 30th May 2005 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan

The 13 course participants from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, beside 4 resource persons, were addressed by Dr Raj Paroda, Regional Coordinator, ICARDA, and Head, PFU, in the opening session. He emphasized on the importance of the PGR data management and desired National Programs to develop needed capabilities. Mr Jan Konopka from ICARDA headquarters planned and organized the workshop in cooperation with scientists from the region, who were previously trained through the ACIAR project.

From 29 May to 1 June, 2005, Dr. Raj Paroda, Regional Coordinator, ICARDA-CAC and Head, PFU-CGIAR visited Almaty, Kazakhstan to review the progress made under the ADB funded project "Improving rural livelihoods through efficient on-farm water and soil fertility management in Central Asia ".
Experts meet to promote market-oriented vegetable research and development programs in CAC

The workshop on "Improved Income and Nutrition in Central Asia and the Caucasus through Enhanced Market- and Trade-oriented Vegetable Systems Research and Development" was held in Tashkent , Uzbekistan , from 25 to 27 April 2005 . Its objective was to review the status of vegetable production, consumption and research, and discuss the most effective means of sharing human and technical resources to enhance the role of vegetables in Central Asia and the Caucasus (CAC).
Eighth Steering Committee Meeting of the CG Program for CACheld at ICARDA, Aleppo , Syria

The eighth meeting of the Steering Committee of the CGIAR Eco-Regional Program for Sustainable Agricultural Development in Central Asia and the Caucasus (CAC) was held at the ICARDA Headquarters, Aleppo, Syria from 2-3 May, 2005.
The World Vegetable Center (AVRDC) joined the CAC Consortium as a new partner. The Memorandum of Understanding was signed during the CGIAR AGM '04 by Dr. Thomas Lumpkin , Director General of AVRDC, and Prof. Dr. Adel El-Beltagy , Chair, CDC Taskforce for CAC and Director General, ICARDA.
Uzbek Farmer Participates in AGM'04 Stakeholders Meeting

Two promising chickpea lines, FLIP-98-121C and FLIP 98-142C, were officially submitted to the State Varietal Testing Commission (SVTC) in Kyrgyzstan on 15 November, 2004. Emerging from ICARDA international nursery, these lines have been tested during the last three years by the scientists of the Kyrgyz Research Institute of Livestock Veterinary and Pastures/Rangeland under the leadership of Dr. Amantay Samsaliev.
Special Donor Meeting on CGIAR Program for CAC Held

A special luncheon meeting for the CGIAR Program for Central Asia and the Caucasus (CAC) was organized in Mexico on 25 October, 2004 during AGM'04. The meeting was co-sponsored by the World Bank, USAID, EU and AREO, Iran . In all, 45 representatives of various CG Centers involved in the Consortium, donor organizations and Science Council as well as CGIAR Secretariat participated.
A traveling workshop to India was organized from 18-26 September, 2004 as part of the component on strengthening capacities of farmers and for national research and technology transfer under the ADB project "Improving rural livelihoods through efficient on-farm water and soil fertility management in Central Asia ". The delegation consisted of 11 scientists from Azerbaijan (2), Kazakhstan (2), Kyrgyzstan (2), Tajikistan (2), Turkmenistan (1) and Uzbekistan (2) headed by Acad. Bobo Sanginov, President, Tajik Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
A workshop on groundnut improvement in the CAC Region was held in Tashkent from 13-17 September, 2004. Organized jointly by ICRISAT and CGIAR-PFU for CAC. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. M. Tashboltaev, First Deputy Director General of the Uzbek Scientific Production Center for Agriculture (UzSPCA). He emphasized the important role of the groundnut for crop diversification and better income generation for resource poor farmers of the CAC region. Eight participants from five CAC countries (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan) attended the workshop. ICRISAT was represented by Drs. Shyam Nigam and Rachakonda Aruna, whereas from CGIAR-PFU for CAC, Drs. Raj Paroda and Zakir Khalikulov participated.
A three-day training workshop titled "From seed to market: a system approach to rice improvement in Central Asia" was held from 9-11 September, 2004 in Tashkent . Similarly as the first one, conducted in August, 2003, this workshop was jointly sponsored and organized by IRRI and the CGIAR-PFU for CAC.
