FIVE DIRECTORS GENERAL WELCOMED BY TAJIK AGRICULTURAL MINISTER

Minister of Agriculture of Tajikistan, received Dr. Mahmoud Solh, the Director General of ICARDA, and four other Directors General, Dr. Masa Iwanaga of CIMMYT, Dr. William Dar of ICRISAT, Dr. Emile Frison of BIOVERSITY and Dr. Thomas Lumpkin of AVRDC The World Vegetable Center, in his office on 29 May 2007.
A field trip to show the activities undertaken by the Consortium Partners in Tajikistan to the participants of the Steering Committee Meeting of CGIAR Program for Central Asia and the Caucasus (CGIAR-CAC) was organized on 28 May 2007.

The Tenth Steering Committee Meeting (SCM) of the CGIAR Ecoregional Program for Sustainable Agricultural Development in Central Asia and the Caucasus (CAC) was held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, from 29 - 30 May, 2007.
General Assembly Meeting of Association of Agricultural Research Institutions of Central Asia and the Caucasus (CACAARI) was organized on 9 March, 2007 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
EXPERT CONSULTATION ON RESEARCH NEED ASSESSMENT IN CAC REGION

New Vacancy: Pasture and Forage Production Specialist

ICARDA has an immediate vacancy for a Professional Officer for Pasture and Forage Production in the ‘Community Action in Integrated and Market Oriented Feed-Livestock Production in Central and South Asia’ project in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
An EPMR Team ( Dr. Elias Fereres and Dr. John Passioura ) visited Tashkent , Uzbekistan from 7-9 June, 2006 to have an overview of the progress achieved under the ICARDA Regional Program for Central Asia and the Caucasus . On 7 June, they met with Dr. Amir Amanov , Advisor, Office of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan , who expressed his high appreciation for the support received from ICARDA to Uzbekistan in the area of germplasm enhancement and seed production. He emphasized the importance of breeding activities in wheat, especially for drought- and heat-tolerance and thanked ICARDA for having initiated last year in Uzbekistan a regional wheat breeding program. He also was happy with the results in the area of crop diversification and noted that new chickpea varieties of ICARDA have a good potential in Uzbekistan . At the end, Dr. Amir Amanov mentioned that ICARDA is facilitating and catalyzing various important agricultural research activities that are very crucial for sustainable development of the CAC countries.
