Primarily the Programme will benefit resource-poor small ruminant producers in CAC by enhancing rural incomes and livelihoods and thus contributing to agricultural growth. In this context the Programme will contribute to IFAD's medium-term strategic goal of improving the competitive capacity of small-scale rural producers, and to IFAD's priority areas for livestock and range management that includes increased understanding of small holder's decision making processes and the promotion of value addition to rangeland products.
The experience and knowledge gained from the research will be of direct benefit to IFAD's growing investment portfolio in CAC. ICARDA will continue to mobilize the experiences and technologies developed within the Mashreq/Maghreb Project enriched with new experiences gained during the implementation of FLP Project in Central Asia, and the technologies proposed by IFAD as TANs. The Programme will focus at the community level with the full participation of livestock producers, as well as national program scientists. It will also assess the adoption potential of technologies being tested, their impact on farmer's livelihood, and consider the implications that policy and property rights issues have on the adoption potential of these technologies. Another equally important element will be the introduction and the development of competitiveness and accountability in the formulation and implementation of research.
The project Agreement was signed on 28 May 2006 between ICARDA and IFAD.
Project period: 1 June 2006 - 30 June 2009. Closing date by 31 December 2009.
