FUTURE EVENTS

Dr. Barbara Rischkowsky, Project Coordinator, will visit Uzbekistan and Tajikistan in September 2009 to work with the project team on the final project reports for the integrated feed and livestock project and to participate in the Inception Workshop of the new IFAD-funded project on improved wool, cashmere, and mohair processing to be held in Tajikistan.
Dr. Joaquin Mueller, Project Consultant, will visit Central Asian region from 21 Sept. to 04 Oct. 2009 to follow-up on community-based breeding activities in Khudzand site, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan under the ongoing feed and livestock project.
Final Regional Workshop of the integrated feed and livestock project will be held on 7-11 December 2009 in Shymkent, Kazakhstan.

Community Action in Integrated and Market Oriented Feed-Livestock Production in Central and South Asia Project

Programme Objectives

The Programme goal is to improve the livelihoods of rural communities in Central and South Asia.

The Programme purpose is to develop and promote community-based actions to support productive and sustainable livestock systems, access to market opportunities, and sustainable management of the natural resource base in the region.

Target Group

The Programme will specifically focus on the emerging small farm enterprises in countries of Central Asia, and resource-poor livestock (small ruminant) producers in rainfed areas of Pakistan.

Expected Programme Impact

The Programme will benefit resource-poor small ruminant producers in Central and South Asia by enhancing rural incomes and livelihoods and thus contributing to agricultural growth. In this context the Programme will contribute to IFAD's medium-term strategic goal of improving the competitive capacity of small-scale rural producers, and to IFAD's priority areas for livestock and range management that includes increased understanding of small holder's decision making processes and the promotion of value addition to rangeland products.

The Programme is intended to produce improved technologies and options. However, the widespread adoption of the Programme's technologies and/or community-based production or marketing enterprises will require support from micro-finance and credit services, and other institutional support services, which are beyond the scope of this Programme. Thus, the impact of the Programme will be achieved through the linkages with IFAD's agricultural services support projects and other development projects in the region.
