Syria: ICARDA's Host Country
Syria is a unique country of startling but pleasant contrasts. An ancient land of ruins, timeworn monuments and age-old traditions, Syria is also a bustling, energetic Republic well along the road of modernization and development. In Syrian cities one often sees grizzled, weathered Bedouins rubbing shoulders with highly-educated professionals. Syrians are well acquainted with many ways of the West, but still cherish their own traditions and customs. It is this unique blend of old and new, familiar and exotic, continuity and change that every first-time visitor senses. ICARDA hopes that during your stay in Syria, you will have an opportunity to savor this diversity and to become acquainted with the generous and friendly people who are our hosts.

What to do before you leave

Obtaining a Visa

All non-Arabs must obtain a Syrian visa from the Syrian Embassy or Consulate in their home country before entering Syria. A single entry visa is normally valid for use for three months from the date of issue. If you are visiting ICARDA at short notice, or if there is no Syrian Embassy or Consulate in your home country or nearby, ICARDA may assist in obtaining an entry visa to Syria. In that case, you should send the following information to your contact at ICARDA at least one week prior to your visit:
- Your name, as it appears in your passport
- Your father's name
- Your mother's name
- Nationality
- Date and place of birth
- Passport number, date and place of issue, date of expiry
- Expected date of entry into Syria
- Duration of stay in Syria
- Port of entry to Syria

If your visa is to be arranged by ICARDA because there is no Syrian Embassy or Consulate in your country, please do not travel to Syria before you have confirmation from ICARDA of your visa number and the date of issue. Upon your arrival in Syria and if your stay is for more than 2 weeks, you have to request an extension of the visa from the Government Liaison Office.
