Adoption of Improved Wheat Technology in the Sudan: Survey Results. 1998.  Faki, H.; Aw-Hassan, A.; Ahmed, A.; Elahmadi, A.; Solh, M. ICARDA Social Science Paper No. 5. 53 pp.

This study evaluates the adoption status of the improved wheat technology, developed through cooperation by the Sudan's Agricultural Research Cooperation with ICARDA and donors within the Nile Valley Regional Program (NVRP) for Cool-Season Food Legumes and Cereals. The study also examines the factors that influence its adoption in the main wheat-producing areas in the Sudan, and provides the results of an analysis of a structured farm survey made in the Sudan in 1993.

Mapping Rural Poverty and Natural Resource Constraints in Dry Areas. 1999. Rodriguez, A.; Thomas, N. 1999. ICARDA Social Science Paper No. 6. 24 pp.

This study discusses rural poverty and natural resource constraints in dry areas using graphical representations of socio-economic and natural-resource endowments or constraints. Because maps are easier to understand and use compared with tabular or statistical presentations, maps were produced for dry areas, population density,
environmental dimensions (availability of arable land and fresh water), child malnourishment, agricultural labor force and social dimensions (number of poor people adjusted for the severity of poverty).

Groundwater Use and Supplemental Irrigation in Atareb, Northwest Syria. 1999. Rodriguez, A.; Salahieh, H.; Badwan, R.; Khawam, H. ICARDA Social Science Paper No. 7. 26 pp.

This report presents the findings of a groundwater-use monitoring study in a village in northwest Syria, and it complements the research of Smith (1994) and Ward and Smith (1994). Suggestions for further water-management research are provided in the light of the growing groundwater scarcity and ongoing policies of the Syrian government to reduce subsidies on production factors, chiefly water, and fertilizer, and to deregulate produce prices.

Can Pastoral Institutions Perform Without Access Options?. 2001. T. Ngaido. ICARDA Social Science Paper No. 9. 25 pp.

This study is intended to contribute to the common-property debate by strengthening the link between property rights and production strategies, and to show how institutional inefficiencies may occur in any system of common-property rights regardless of the degree of control that communities have over their resources. The study draws comparisons between the Moroccan and Nigerian experiences to evaluate the factors that have led to institutional inefficiencies.

Supplemental Irrigation Potential for Wheat in the Central Anatolian Plateau of Turkey
.
2001. Oweis, T.; Salkini, A.; Zhang, H.; Ilbeyi, A.; Ustun, H.; Dernek, Z.; Erdem, G. 37 pp.

This research report is the first output of the joint endeavor between ICARDA and the Central Anatolian Plateau (CAP) in Turkey to achieve the objective of improving the use-efficiency of available water resources including rain, ground and surface water in CAP. The study is intended to contribute to a better understanding of the status and the role of supplemental irrigation in the production of wheat in CAP and, to determine the potential, constraints, and research needs for improving the management of this practice for higher and more stable yields.

Sheep Management Practices in Iraq, Jordan and Syria: the Case of Reproduction and Fertility. Integrated Natural Resource Management - Technical Research Report Series No. 2. 2003. Thomson, E.F.; Martini, M.A.; Tutwiler, R.N. 43 pp. ISBN: 92-9127-133-5.

Until now surveys of sheep production in West Asia have largely ignored the reproductive management applied by herders and flock owners. Moreover, little attention has been given to understanding the reasons why they manage the animals in the way they do. Such an understanding is vital to the success of efforts to increase flock productivity. This report presents information taken from a survey of sheep reproduction and fertility in Iraq, Jordan and Syria conducted in 1995. The research aimed to better understanding of the reproductive practices applied by a sample of flock owners in Iraq, Jordan and Syria. The report presents a synthesis of the results from the three countries.

Drought, Livestock Losses and the Potential for Feed Production from Arable Land in Afghanistan: A Case Study of 183 Villages with Mixed Crop/Livestock Farming Systems.
Thomson, Euan, Terence Barker and Joaquin Mueller. 2003. Integrated Natural Resource Management Research Report Series, No. 5. ICARDA, Aleppo, Syria, viii + 34 pp. En. ISBN: 92-9127-143-7.

An important element in any multi-component, long-term strategy to restore the productivity of livestock in Afghanistan is the production of more high-quality feed, by growing forage crops on fallow land and improving the yields of the existing feed crops. A better supply of feed would result in more productive livestock and increase the supply of animal-derived foods. This would have a positive impact on the health and livelihoods of the rural and urban poor. However, there are risks associated with over-promoting the growing of forage crops on fallow land as the solution to the feed deficit problem in Afghanistan. Evidence of these risks is the limited success of this approach over the last 50 years elsewhere in West Asia and North Africa. Future efforts to increase feed supplies in Afghanistan should take note of the lessons learned from earlier programs in the region.
