Crop-related research
The CWANA (Central and
West Asia and North Africa) region is the center of origin of many of the
worlds major staple food crops. For example, wheat, barley, lentil and
chickpea were domesticated in CWANA; carbonized lentil remains found at Tel
Mureybit on the banks of the Euphrates river, in northern Syria, date back
10,000 years. Germplasm collected in these areas often contains valu-able
genes for resistance to abiotic stresses such as heat, cold and drought, as
well as biotic stresses including pests and diseases.
Plant breeders working on these crops therefore depend
on rare and potentially useful germplasm from CWANA in the development of
more productive and stress-resistant varieties. Invariably, these breeders
turn to the ICARDA Genetic Resources Unit, which has extensive collections
(more than 120,000 accessions) of useful germplasm.
