Conservation of temperate food, pasture and forage legume biodiversity in WANA

The objectives of this project in collaboration with USDA/ARS and Washington State University are to document ex-situ conservation of forage and food-legume genetic resources in gene banks in WANA and outside the region; develop linkages between US universities and national genetic resource programs in WANA and ICARDA through research activities and training; characterize the genetic diversity available for temperate forage and feed legumes and their wild and weedy progenitors from the WANA region; establish the extent of genetic erosion of these legumes in their primary centers of origin and diversity; and develop complementary methods of germplasm conservation, including in-situ conservation and development of core collections.
The University of California, Riverside, is also involved informally with ICARDA in genetic resources conservation and evaluation.
