Training
Training is provided through
specialized short courses held in the Nile Valley region, in Ethiopia, and
at ICARDA headquarters in Syria, covering variety improvement, plant pathology
and protection, system management, experimental design, statistical analysis,
reporting and presentation of research results, impact assessment, and other
topics. National scientists are also sent to other countries on traveling
workshops, led by multidisciplinary teams of ICARDA scientists, to review
on-station and on-farm research, make joint line/variety selections, and compare
research methods.
ICARDAs training efforts in Ethiopia began in 1979. The period 1986-89
saw particularly heavy emphasis on expanding highland pulses research capability,
and several scientists were sponsored for post-graduate studies. These efforts,
in cooperation with various universities, have led to the development of a
dedicated and vigorous research team actively involved in research relevant
to poorer farmers. ICARDA continues to support Ethiopian scientists in pursuing
advanced degrees. During 1979-2001, 550 Ethiopian staff benefited from various
training courses.
