In the mid 1980s, sub-Saharan Africa suffered a severe drought. Ethiopia was particularly hard hit by the resulting famine, made worse by war. Other countries suffered, but it is the image of starving Ethiopia that has stayed in the public mind.
This booklet describes the work that ICARDA is doing in partnership with national agriculturists to improve the nutrition, incomes, and well-being of farm families and rural poor in Ethiopia. Through development of improved crop varieties and production technologies, training, information exchange and institutional capacity building, we can hope to avoid a repeat of the grim suffering witnessed in the 1980s.

New grasspea genotypes with low neurotoxin content, developed at ICARDA, are being shared with the countries where grasspea is grown for food. The material will be tested and adapted to replace traditional varieties high in neurotoxin.
