New Socioeconomics Project for Central Asia
IFPRI and ICARDA have initiated a joint study, Economic analysis of sustainable land management options in Central Asia. The study will support the Central Asian Countries Initiative on Land Management (CACILM), a large research consortium funded by the Asian Development Bank and other donors. The purpose of this study is to assess the economic feasibility, costs and benefits of alternative land management options within important domains and land use systems in Central Asia. The results will help decision makers prioritize investment opportunities to promote sustainable land management (SLM); and identify key constraints that must be addressed through policy or institutional changes in order to realize these opportunities.

The new project will build on the ongoing SLM research under CACILM, being led by ICARDA and partners from Central Asian countries. It will focus on options being tested or those with good potential in the benchmark sites of the CACILM SLM research project. It will also link to a companion policy research project being initiated by ICARDA and IFPRI, Enabling livelihood options for sustainable land management in Central Asia, Pakistan and China.

The inception workshop of the new project was held in Tashkent on 19 September, attended by a wide range of stakeholders. The objectives, expected outcomes and planned activities were discussed. Based on feedback from the participants, implementation plans are being refined and expanded. Activities will begin later this year.
