Dr John Ryan received the 2007 Soil Science
Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his lifetime
contributions in soil science at the Tri-Society (American
Society of Agronomy, Soil Science Society of America, and Crop Science
Society of America) annual intenational meetings, held in New Orleans,
USA, 4-8 November. Prof. Dr Iajuddin Ahmed, President of Bangladesh,
presented the award to Dr Ryan. Scientists from IRRI, CIMMYT and ICRISAT
also won awards, raising the image of the CGIARs scientific
excellence in the world's major agricultural scientific forum.
Dr Ryan presented four poster papers at the Tri-Society meetings,
describing research by ICARDA scientists in collaboration with colleagues
from Turkey, Lebanon, Morocco and Uzbekistan. He also participated
in the Golden Opportunities Scholar Forum and served as Chair of the
L.R. Frederick Travel Grant Committee. Dr Ryan was also recognized
at the Centenary Reception marking the 100th anniversary of the founding
of the American Society of Agronomy for authoring a chapter (along
with Dr Bill Payne, Texas A&M) on the international history of
ASA in the Centenary publication launched at the anniversary celebrations.
