ICARDA Signs Durum Project Agreement with Aleppo University

ICARDA is set to further strengthen its cooperation with Aleppo University. An agreement of scientific cooperation was signed on 26 August 2003 by ICARDA Director General Prof. Dr Adel El-Beltagy and Aleppo University Rector Dr Mohammad Sayeed Farhoud that will enable the Center to contribute to the implementation of the Durum Wheat Improvement Project, developed by the University and the European Commission, with special emphasis on water-use efficiency and yield stabilization by means of biological and molecular methods.
     As part of the agreement, ICARDA, as the sub-contractor, will be responsible for management of the financial credits allocated to the University within the framework of the project; facilitate purchase of equipment; and provide technical backstopping in line with the project agenda. The University will be responsible for the research activities of the project, jointly with ICARDA, and for reporting on progress. The reports will be sent to the project senior coordinator, Dr Roberto Tobroza, Bologna University, Italy.

was attended by Drs Moustafa Jatal, Vice-Rector for Administration; Mohammad Nizar Akeel, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, Aleppo University; and Dr Faisal Maya, Director, Government Liaison Office, ICARDA; Dr Mouneer Al-Hamud, University Secretary-General; Dr Adeeb Rahmeh, Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Aleppo University; and Dr Ahmad Al-Ahmad and Dr Miloudi Nachit, senior coordinators of the project, from Aleppo University and ICARDA, respectively.
