Considering the interest in horticultural exports and the potential role of horticultural crops in poverty alleviation through domestic markets, in the NENA region, an expert consultation/ workshop aiming to contribute to better understanding of prospects and constraints to the sector were organised by ICARDA and IFAD.

 

Objectives

 

►To identify and discuss opportunities and constraints/barriers in producing and exporting horticultural products and to propose solutions;

►To examine some success stories, including types of partnerships, to derive lessons learned in the domestic and export marketing of horticultural products from countries within and outside the region;

►To elucidate the domestic and export potential of horticultural products suitable for smallholders production and having the potential to contribute to poverty reduction and to identify key commodities and countries with comparative advantage in the region;

►To identify actions, partnerships and programs necessary for promoting domestic and export marketing of horticultural products in the region, especially for poverty alleviation for small farmers.
