A regional expert workshop on the role of herbal, medicinal and aromatic plants (HMAPs) in improving the livelihoods of the rural poor was held at ICARDA on 10-12 June. The workshop was jointly organized by ICARDA and IFAD. Fifty six (56) participants from 23 countries attended the event

 

Workshop Objectives :

  • To assess the potential market and the scope of HMAPs in reducing rural poverty and in improving the livelihood of rural poor in the NENA region;

  • To identify and discuss constraints and opportunities for sustainable collection and cultivation of HMAPs and for linking and integrating small collectors and growers to domestic and international markets;

  • To examine some success stories and to derive lessons learned, preferably from inside the NENA region, in the collection, cultivation, and marketing of HMAPs; and

  • To identify priority interventions and partnerships necessary for taking full advantage of HMAPs in reducing poverty and improving livelihood of the rural poor in the NENA region.
